Edson Sabajo and Guillaume "Gee" Schmidt, the founders of Patta, bonded over their shared passion for music and Hip-Hop in the 1990s. Both of Surinamese descent, they named their company after the Surinamese word for "shoe" in Sranan Tongo, adding a double 'T' for correct pronunciation. In 2004, they opened Patta's first store in Amsterdam, defying the industry norm of continent-specific product lines by sourcing exclusive sneakers from around the world. They would travel to cities like New York, hunt for unique footwear, and personally carry their finds back to the Netherlands, often navigating customs and shipping challenges to bring rare styles to their customers.
